Boomerang

Kristaps is an energetic boy, who spends his free time playing with friends in a sports field near his house. Among his favorite activities are cycling down the neverending white lines of the stadium, street basketball if more than three friends are playing, or tennis with parents when the whole family has decided to do some sports. The only person, who is bored in these cases, is his younger sister Rebeca. She has already learned how to hold a tennis racket, and sometimes even hits a ball. However, a proper oponent she would possibly be when little more grown up with at least seven candles on her birthday cake.

Kristaps usually is not sad that his sister is still small, he has enough  good friends near by. Bruno with his brother live next door to Kristaps. With them he has the most fun games, most mischievous adventures, and the hottest battles on the basketball court.

Today, however, no friends are there, and does not look like they will, so Kristaps takes his little sister by the hand and heads to the field. But she has important work to do – feeding doll Dora, making her bed and only then Rebeca will be ready to head out with the doll in its new cart for a gracious walk round the yard. What is on brother's mind? Something called boomerang that flies away and then comes back like a dog runs back to the owner with found wooden branch. Rebeca is not interested in that at all, and she clearly shows it to her brother.

Well, what to do. Kristaps takes the boomerang and starts playing alone. He throws the not too large L shaped thing and then waits for it to return, following it with a focused look. Yes, it worked! He solidifies his confidence about how this works, throwing it again and again. A truly wonderful thing! Does not look like it has some built in complex navigation or other technology that precisely finds the way back but the result of all throws is clear – it comes back. It makes a small turn and finds its owner.

Kristaps carefully examines this strange object, trying to figure out its secret but with no success. Does colour matter? Most probably not. Maybe material? Who knows. Maybe the sahape is what makes the miracle happen? Possibly.

Rebecca has also done her duty towards doll Dora, and is now ready to join Kristaps in flying this strange object and watching it return.

After doing this for a while, they still have not figured out its mysterious secret. Soon Kristaps is already tired of guessing and contemplating what is the secret, and changes his attention to grandma who has been watching them already for a while.

''Grandma, how is a boomerange finding its way back? I throw it away, it makes a round and returns to me with still a lot of power,'' the boy impatiently asks.

''Grandma?'' Kristaps calls again, as grandma is probably in her thoughts and has not heard him, as it sometimes happens.

''How is the boomerang returning?'' Kristaps tries again.

''Excuse me? Yes, dear, a boomerang, you see, is a very tricky thing – no matter where you throw it, it always finds its way back to you. In fact, there are many things that return but a boomerang is one of the rare ones that you can see. The rest you can only feel, hear or experience. Your thoughts and actions also have boomerang's nature. Remeber how you lent your felt-tip pens to John during the drawing class because he had forgotten his at home? What happened in the evening at your ice-hockey practice? Wasn't John the one who lent you his stick because you forgot yours in dad's car? Wasn't this the boomerang of your action?'' Grandma is remembering while putting words in beautiful threads of sentences.

''Remember how you noticed a five Eur banknote falling out of the pocket of a passer by, and how you were hesitant to give it back? I was really happy that you gave it back instead of keeping it. My joy was even bigger when you got rewarded for it – the lovely gentleman gave you the toy that he got at the shop's check out as a gift for extra large purchase. That was the boomerang of your action. I have always said – do unto others what you want to be done unto you. Even thoughts or what you wish somebody become a boomerang. If we wish somebody joy and happiness, we become more joyful and happy. In return, if we are happy for other people misfortunes, the same misfortunes find us, too. That is the boomerang of thoughts. There is also one of words. It finds us through words. If you talk about somebody behind their back or say untrue things about them, somebody is doing the same to you. Oh, yes, I just remembered – there is also the boomerang of attitude. It hits really painfully because nothing is being said out in words. It stays in your heart and accummulates. You throw the attitude boomerang when your mom is telling you something or asks to do something, but you are not even listening to her, angrily turning your back. Then she can't really understand what you are angry about, as you neither say or do something. You leave mom in ignorance, making her feel bad, although, your mom is not to blame for your bad mood. You releaase the attitude boomerang smiling at your sister or unexpectedly delighting your parents with self make Sunday breakfast for the whole family. Those are the moments when you show your affection or dislike towards somebody or something. All these boomerangs return to you with the same power that you threw it with. Boomerang is a truly magical thing – it can sting, bite and hurt, and also warm up, support and comfort. One I know for sure – the people who throw the boomerang of good actions, thoughts, words and attitude as often as they can, are happy. If you will throw at least one of these boomerangs every day, you will receive at least one of them back as well. So, what kind of boomerangs will you choose to throw?'' grandma asks with a cunning smile, closing the long answer to Kristap's short question. Now Kristaps owes an answer...
